Message from Colorado GOP Chairman Ryan Call on Redistricting | |
| April 19th, 2011 |
Dear Fellow Republican,
Later today, the bipartisan Congressional Redistricting Committee will meet at the State Capitol in Denver to consider the congressional district maps introduced by both parties.
As you may have seen in the maps proposed by the Democrats last Friday, they showed that they are shamefully out-of-touch with Coloradans by abusing the redistricting process, ignoring the clear standards set forth in the Colorado Constitution, setting aside over thirty years of established legal precedent, and robbing the citizens of Colorado of the chance at fair and effective representation. If you had any doubt why winning a Republican majority in the State House this last election was so important, the Democrats have just given you your answer.
Under the Democrat’s congressional redistricting plan, the same Congressman who would represent liberal Boulder would also represent Mesa County and the western slope. See it for yourself below:
2011 DEMOCRATIC REDISTRICTING PLAN:
Contrast the Democrat plan above with the current Congressional districts below that have served Colorado citizens well for the past decade. As you can clearly see, the Democrats have shamefully over-reached, and are once again putting partisan political interests before the needs of the people of Colorado.
CURRENT CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICTS (2002-2010):
The congressional district maps the Democrats have proposed to the Bipartisan Redistricting Committee are quite simply outrageous. Their proposals would fracture the western slope and eastern plains, divide Larimer County right down the middle, pack Colorado Springs and Highlands Ranch into the same district, and put liberal Boulder County in the same district as Mesa County and Delta County. If the Democrats have their way, we could end up with every Colorado member in Congress all living within a few miles of the Denver International Airport.
Do Democrats really believe that the interests of a suburban mom in Jefferson County are the same as the rancher in Moffat County, or that the wheat farmer in Kit Carson County or Kiowa County has the same concerns about agriculture and land use as the coal miner in La Plata County or the ski lift operator in Telluride?
But it’s not too late to have your voice heard. The Democratic members of the Congressional Redistricting Committee still have the opportunity to set partisan interests aside and do what is right for the citizens of Colorado.
I urge you to contact Senator Rollie Heath, Senator Gail Schwartz, Senator Morgan Carroll, Representative Dan Pabon and Representative Ed Vigil, along with Democratic Minority Leader Sal Pace at (303) 866-5523 and Senate President Brandon Shaffer at (303) 866-5291, and tell them that Colorado citizens deserve better. Remind them of their obligation to draw fair and legal districts that follow the guidelines in the State Constitution and respect the distinct interests of the eastern plains and the western slope.
Tell the Democrats at the State Capitol that Coloradans deserve fair representation in all of our congressional districts.
Sincerely,
Chairman Ryan Call
