Help Defend School Choice in Douglas County

July 31st, 2011

An important message from Charcie Russell for Douglas County Republicans

I need your help.  We need to pack Judge Martinez's Denver court this week for school choice. Please consider if you could be present in his court room this Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

The Hearing on Motion for Preliminary Injunction (motion by Plaintiffs to stop the Choice Scholarship Program down immediately) is next week!

Where: 1437 Bannock Street, Denver, Courtroom #259 (Judge Michael Martinez)

When: August 2-4, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Lunch break ~12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Note: No tee-shirts, signs, buttons, stickers or recording devices in the courtroom.

Judge Martinez will be hearing a plea to stop the Douglas County School Choice Program, before it even begins.  This is unfair and harmful to the parents and children who are a part of this program.  They have already enrolled in private schools with the Douglas County School Choice program and so this injunction throws chaos into their lives.  When and what will happen to their children is completely up in the air. Tuition has been paid to their private school of choice and their consideration for public school enrollment has been given up under the assumption that this model school choice program would proceed this year.  This means that charter school spots have been given up, that public school honors program testing has already been completed, and that sports teams are in place, etc.  It means that public school will be underway while private schools haven't begun yet. What are these parents to do?!  One family has dropped from the program because of the havoc this injunction would cause for their young child.

It's important that we have many people present in the courtroom so the judge knows how important these families are, as well as the program they are a part of.  The voters of Douglas County overwhelmingly elected a school board that would bring more school choice to parents and they have fulfilled that promise.  The ACLU and a tiny group of plaintiffs have chosen not only to bring suit regarding the program, but now at this late date, they want to impose their will to stop the program before it even begins as a pilot.

For the sake of freedom of choice for all parents and children, whether you are from Douglas County or not, please give a couple hours this week to attend court.   Many thanks.
