District Captain Election in District 9 (SW Highlands Ranch)

September 24th, 2009

The district captain in district 9, Doug Schlagel, has submitted his resignation due to having moved out of the district.  As a result, there is an opening in the office of District Captain in district 9.

District 9 consists of precincts 10, 23, 35, and 46 as depicted in the map below.

There will be a Vacancy Committee meeting held on October 6th, 2009 at 7:30pm, at the Highlands Ranch Library (9292 Ridgeline Blvd., Highlands Ranch, CO 80129 - map) to elect the new district captain.  Any registered Republican that lives within the district may run for the office of district captain but only current precinct committee people may cast votes.  Official notices of this election have been sent to the precinct committee people, as per the bylaws.

The newly elected district captain will complete Doug Schlagel's term which runs until the next organizational meeting in February 2011.

As per the party’s bylaws, some of the primary duties of district captain are:

  • Attend the monthly Executive Committee meetings.
  • Ensure the proper conduct of the precinct caucuses within the district.
  • Conduct one training session, or participate in county-wide training sessions for the district precinct committee people prior to the precinct caucus.
  • Distribute campaign literature, Republican and DCR information to Precinct Committee People and coordinate get-out-the-vote efforts within the district.
  • Fill/appoint any vacancies in the office of Committee Person in the district.
  • Appoint an assistant district captain.
  • Conduct district meetings and perform other functions at the County Assembly.

More complete information regarding the duties of district captains may be found in the party bylaws at http://www.dcgop.org/archive/bylaws.pdf, specifically in Article XIV Section 4.

All precinct people in district 9 are strongly encouraged to attend the meeting so they may vote for the new district captain, and energetic registered Republicans in district 9 are encouraged to run for the office.  Official picture ID will be required of those participating in the election either as voting precinct people or as candidates, and current Republican affiliation will be verified.

The meeting will be held in the "Shea B" room.  This room has a capacity of 35 people.  We expect this space to be sufficient but in the event of high attendance, priority will be given to current precinct people of district 9 and those persons that are running for the office, and then in order of arrival--with residents of district 9 always having priority over non-residents.

Questions regarding the office of district captain and this election may be directed to the party Secretary, Craig Steiner.  Contact information may be found here.
